I saw a blurb in The Boston Herald today that said Jim Rice, my favorite ballplayer of all time, has started a new blog. So I pop in to visit www.ask14.com for the first time, and what do I find on the “About Jim Rice” page?
A link to one of my articles about him.

I am a lucky man.
Any number of usual reasons could be cited to support this fact – health, happiness, security – but I have something more specific mind. Something more concrete. Something that I think is unique.
What I have is proof, beyond the doubt of even the most cynical person, that my children are good people. [...]

There aren’t many things that will embarrass a 12-year old boy more than losing any kind of sports-related contest to his 7-year old sister. We learned this first-hand over the weekend, as the NCAA basketball tournament played out.

It’s been a while, so let me run through a couple of quick commercials that I found to be particularly ridiculous as I watched the NCAA Tournament this afternoon:

Just in case there’s any confusion regarding my terribly bland last name, it is Irish. In fact, apparently at one point the family name was actually O’Banion. In Irish, that means “a descendant of Banion”, with Banion being a derivative of the Irish word for white, “ban”. (If you know any French (blanc) or Italian (bianco) or [...]

My company recently provided me with a Blackberry as my cell phone, with the expectation that I would use it primarily for work.
The company I work for is located in Switzerland.
I live in Kansas.
The calling plan they provided does not include international calls.

There is a certain former professional athlete for one of Boston’s teams that has unquestionably been unfairly excluded from his sport’s Hall of Fame for no good reason. No, I am not talking about Jim Rice. Ha!
Instead, I want to briefly make the case for Celtics and Jayhawks great Jo Jo White. (No relation.) White’s [...]

News of the apparent extra-marital dalliances of Eliot Spitzer spread quickly through our building yesterday, and the reaction here was universal. Every single person who heard the news within my hearing immediately broke into maniacal laughter.
I don’t mean that they chuckled, or giggled, or tittered. I mean evil scientist laughter, of the type you would [...]

This past Friday, I played in my regular once-monthly poker game. The game is always held at the house of this one friend of mine, and usually attracts 10-12 guys broken into two tables. This is very low stakes poker.* The first buy-in is usually for ten dollars, and the max bet and raise is fifty cents, [...]
